Agáve Ferdinandi - Regis (Král Agáve) bylo pojmenováno na počest bulharského krále Ferdinanda. Je to úžasná, tvarem malá, ale krásná, pomalu rostoucí rostlina. Dorůstá do maximální výšky 46 cm, její průměr je 46 cm. Má otevřenou růžici 13 cm dlouhých, silných, modrozelených listů s úzkými podélnými trsy bílých pupenů, které mají obvykle trojúhelníkový tvar. Červenohnědé listy jsou velmi pevné, tuhé a duté.
Tato rostlina byla několika odborníky považována za rostlinu Agáve Victoria – Reginae, má však otevřenější růžici s menším počtem větších listů, má méně potisku na pupenech a místo stříbrných okrajů listů má okraje tmavě červenohnědé. Agáve Victoria - Reginae a Agáve Ferdinandi - Regis vypadají docela odlišně.
Rostlina Agáve Victoria - Reginae pochází z mexických států Coahuila, Durango a Nuevo León, zatímco Agáve Ferdinandi - Regis pochází z oblasti Saltillo v Coahuila. Král Agáve roste v nadmořské výšce mezi 1200 -1524 metrů (na vápenci).
Květenství má tvar obrovského klasu vysokého od 2 do 4 metrů, který obsahuje mnoho párových květů různých barev, často s odstíny fialově červené. Kvete v létě, stejně jako všechny druhy agáve, má dlouhý životní cyklus a kvete po 20 až 30 letech vegetativního růstu. Rostlina dává veškerou svoji energii do květu a po odkvetení po krátké chvíli uhyne. Během celé své existence však urodí několik malých potomků, a tak jeho životní cyklus i nadále pokračuje.
Rostlina má ráda plné slunce a dobře odvodněnou půdu, tak jako ostatní agáve a juky. Nevyžaduje žádné zavlažování. Vystačí si sama, zásobuje se z půdní i vzdušné vlhkosti.
Toto agáve by mělo být stejně jako ostatní agáve chráněno před deštěm, sněhem, větrem a mrazem. Při výsadbě v chladnějších zónách, než v zóně 8, bude nezbytná zimní ochrana. Buď pomocí topných kabelů s miniaturním přístřeškem nebo skleník vyrobený z polykarbonátových panelů a s topným tělesem.
Důrazně doporučujeme tento exemplář vysadit do otevřené, dobře odvodněné půdy na jižní straně zahrady, nejlépe do skalky nebo na vyšší místo, na plném slunci. Agáve a juky by měly být VŽDY vysázeny minimálně 20 - 30 cm nad okolní půdu, aby přebytečná voda odtékala pryč od kořenů rostliny a nezůstávala kolem kořenového systému. Jinak by mohlo nastat uhnívání kořenů i kmene. Milují vysazování u blízkých skal a kamenů, které slunce zahřívá, a tím dávají kořenům rostliny během celého vegetačního období spoustu potřebného tepla.
Velmi doporučujeme výsev tohoto exempláře do volné půdy v ČR.

Agave ferdinandi-regis (King of the Agaves) was named in honour of King Ferdinand of Bulgaria. It is a stunning small and beautiful slow-growing agave growing to a maximum size of 46cm (18 inches) in height by 46 cm ( 18 inches) in diameter with an open rosette of 13 cm in length triangular blue-green leaves having narrow longitudinal white bud imprints that usually form a triangle shape. The leaves are very firm, very stiff, slanting upwards, deeply hollow on the upper surface, almost folded, The margins of the leaves are dark reddish brown and spineless terminating at the blunt leaf tip in a stout spine in the same color.
This plant was considered by a few specialists to be a form or synonym of Agave victoriae-reginae and is also confused by this agave but in comparison with the typical Agave victoriae-reginae it has a more open rosette with fewer and larger leaves, less bud imprinting and instead of silver colored margins it has dark reddish brown edges. It also often has multiple small spines subtending the large terminal spine, a feature which has never been seen on Agave victoriae-reginae. A. victoria reginae and A. Ferdinadi regis look quite distinct and there does not appear to be any 'transition' forms in nature, which one would expect to see if these two were really the same.
The Agave victoriae-reginae race comes from the Mexican States of Coahuila, Durango and Nuevo León whereas Agave ferdinandi-regis comes from the Saltillo area in Coahuila. The King Ferdinand Agave grows at an elevation between 1200 m – 1524m – (4,000-5,000 feet) in shrub and succulent desert area on limestone).
The inflorescence is in the form of a giant spike, from 2 to 4 metres high, containing many paired flowers of various colours, often with shades of purple red. It blooms in summer as with all types of agaves it has a long life cycle and sets flowers after approximately 20 to 30 years of vegetative growth, and the effort to produce the flowers exhausts the plant to such a degree that it dies within a short time afterwards but before it dies, it pushes out many offshoots (pups) within it’s life so its life cycle continues.
The plant likes full sun and well-drained soil, just like other agaves and yuccus so we strongly recommend planting this specimen on the south side of the garden, preferably in a rock garden or in higher soil in full sun. Agaves and yuccas should ALWAYS be planted at least 20-30 cm above the surrounding soil so that excess water flows away from the plant's roots and does not remain around the root system. Otherwise, the roots of the trunk could rot. They love being planted by nearby rocks and stones, which are heated by the sun, thus giving the roots of the plant a lot of necessary heat during the growing season.
It requires very little to no irrigation. It will take moisture from the soil and humidity from the air as it needs it.
This agave, like other agaves, should be protected from rain, snow, wind and frost. When planting in colder zones than in zone 8, winter protection will be necessary, either by heating cables with the help of a miniature shelter or glasshouse made from polycarbonate transparent panels and also equipped with a fan heater and thermostat.
